The Obvious Methods to Get More Blog Traffic

When I first started getting serious about blogging, I was looking at all of the obvious methods for getting more traffic. One of those being social media sharing.

Social Media

Let’s face it. Social Media is just not how you get people to click through unless you’re sharing that same post over and over again like a broken record. And, then, the chances of individuals clicking on the link are slim.

Social Media is a quick platform and usually requires short attention spans. Plus, conversion can be small (not counting advertising). I’m not saying don’t use it, just watch your stats and pay attention to them. See how I automate sharing my posts on social media here.

SEO

I started to learn more about SEO and how I could optimize my blog posts to get people to find me in Google Searches. But that’s not an easy feat. You can optimize until you’re blue in the face, but if you’re not doing it correctly, you’re just wasting time.

Use a tool like Yoast if you want to start implementing better optimization. SEO is long term, don’t expect significant results overnight. You have to work it, set it, and forget it so it can do the job. But do it!

Pinterest Was Sending Me 90% Of My Blog Traffic

I discovered through Google Analytics that I was getting a lot of traffic to my blog from this one source, Pinterest. And, by a lot of traffic, I mean about 90% of my hits was coming from there.

As I started researching more about Pinterest (on Pinterest btw), I discovered that people don’t realize that Pinterest is, in fact, a search engine…just like Google. But, my audience was using it more to find the topics I was writing about on my blog than they were using Google to find them.

So, How Do You Strategically Use Pinterest?

Get Rich Pins

If you’re blogging on your domain and using metadata on your posts correctly (that’s what Yoast is for), then you can apply for Rich Pins by entering your URL into their verification tool, and voila, you’re set.

Rich Pins are going allow you to show extra detail in your pins such as your full recipe, or how to buy your product. All of the big companies use it, and I do too (if you want to see what that looks like).

Create Great Share Graphics

Your graphics should be compelling enough to grab the reader’s attention. The graphics or photos should not distract from the text. Your text should be bold and easily read. Stay away from fonts that are hard to read.

Also, graphics that are longer tend to be more favored, so get in the habit of designing them with the dimensions of 2:3 ratio (600 pixels wide minimum). Here, check out an always updated social image sizing guide at Social Sprout.

Include these on your blog post, and use a pinning plugin to help your readers easily see how to pin that image when they hover their mouse over the graphic. Hover over mine here on this post to see what I mean (I use Social Warfare for mine).

Brand Your Pinterest

The biggest thing I did for myself was brand my Pinterest account. When I see someone that has 100s of boards that are all over the place, I usually will just pick a few boards to follow. I don’t follow “the person” per se, just the boards that matter to me. Why? Because they don’t matter to me.

When you brand your account, you can stay on point, and people will see everything you pin to be relevant to their needs. Keep anything off brand set up as a secret board. No need for more than one account.

Give them Reason to Click (opt-ins)

These days, people need a reason to click on your Pin and see what you’re talking about. If you’re offering a compelling freebie, like a workbook or something like that, include that on the graphic and talk about it in the Alt Text on WordPress for that image, so it’s there on Pinterest, too! Use a Looper and Scheduler

I learned about this impressive feature while cruising Pinterest but dived more into it in detail when I took a course on Pinterest from Melyssa Griffen. Melyssa’s class will dive deep into using Pinterest, and you will not be disappointed. If you’re serious about Pinterest, check it out.*

BoardBooster

A looper, like BoardBooster*, allows you to continually loop your pins. You can choose to loop say give pins a day on one board, two on another, etc. By looping your pins, it allows your content to always be fresh on Pinterest.

Then, you can tell BoardBooster to remove the pin with the least amount of repins in X amount of days to avoid duplicates. It’s been one of the best things I did for my Pinterest account and my blog traffic! Interested in BoardBooster*.

Tailwind

I recently switched to TailWind* for scheduling my pins and holy moly; the traffic has boomed! I used BoardBooster for scheduling, but I have seen a bigger jump since using TailWind.

Plus, Tailwind to me is a lot easier to use and faster when it comes to scheduling a lot of content I find to share that isn’t my own, but still relevant to my followers. It recommends other pins that might be on brand for you. Click a button and you’ve scheduled it. It can’t get any easier than that!

My Pins get a daily average of 1.1 Million views. So, the chances of those being my posts are high. Which means they come back to my blog and buy from me or sign up for my email list. I have a steady growth of followers that I know helps me have more people see my pins.

Costs

BoardBooster costs me $10 a month to loop 1000 pins. Tailwind costs me $120 for the year for unlimited pins (that’s just $10 a month). I only wish I could use the looping feature with Tailwind to avoid two services. I have been reading up on how you can do this, but it’s not automatic like BoardBooster. I’ll write up a post on this later for you.

$20 a month isn’t bad to drive traffic to your blog and increase your email list. Which mine did. I grew my email list 1000% in just a few short months when I started out using it and an opt-in freebie.

Share Other Relevant Content

And, you have to share other people’s content that is relevant to your brand. You just have to! It can’t be all about you. So, PIN five pins that aren’t yours to everyone that you share of your own.

Sharing other content is why scheduling is so helpful! Staggering your posts through the best times of the day for high engagement (that’s Tailwind) you can be sure not to be spammy and spread out the love for your followers.

Consistently doing these things will only grow your Pinterest followers and views, which gets them to visit your blog.

    Hey Holly! How many pins would you say one should do to a particular board in a day? I read on creative market’s blog that you said 30-50. But Is that 30-50 in total of all the boards or just one?
