But the truth is … this book didn’t just come from a creative idea.
It came from a really heavy season of my life.

Last summer, I received news that my sister’s murderer was granted parole. For two weeks, I lived in a constant state of anxiety. I was scared, overwhelmed, and reliving everything all over again.

During that time, I made the decision to start writing her story. And I did. I spent months working on it. But as I got deeper into it, the fear came back of what might happen when I release it, fear of retaliation, fear of reopening something so painful.

So I paused.

I will go back to it one day. I know I will.
But at that moment, I needed something lighter to hold onto.

Feeling Anxious

At the same time, I was also dealing with another kind of stress … finances.

If you’re a creative, you probably understand the ebb and flow. Some seasons feel abundant, and others feel really hard.

January through June of last year almost broke me. And as the new year came around, I found myself wondering how I was going to get through another slow season again.

I told myself I would focus on growing by building my illustration portfolio, taking courses, learning about licensing my art. I found a program I really wanted to join, but it was $3,000.

And that just wasn’t possible for me.

So I had to ask myself:
What can I do right now?

How a Galentine’s Drawing Night Inspired This Bow Drawing Book

Last fall, I was invited to host a virtual Galentine’s drawing night in February for my sorority alumnae. It would be a fun draw-with-me event focused on cute, simple doodles in a valentine theme (ironic since my sister was murdered on Valentine’s Day).

What a lot of people don’t know is that I used to have a YouTube channel where I taught iPad lettering and drawing. At one point, it was doing really well. I had found my rhythm and loved teaching others how to create.

But after COVID, things changed. The channel slowed down, and eventually, I stepped away from it.

So coming back to teaching in this setting felt unfamiliar.

The first night, I felt rusty.
The second night, something clicked again.

It felt natural. Easy. Like coming back to a part of myself I hadn’t accessed in a while.

At the end of one of the sessions, someone asked me:
“What’s your favorite thing to draw?”

My answer was immediate: bows.

I draw bows in everything: my doodles, my illustrations, even my pattern designs.

Then someone said:
“You should make your own bow drawing book.”

And something about that stuck.

Because maybe I couldn’t invest in a $3,000 course.
But I could create something of my own.
