I LOVE when you come to me with questions about how to do things. That’s what makes awesome content for my blog and readers! Yehudis Goldfarb is a professional photographer that came to me for advice on how to place text on top of her photo for her website. Read about 3 ways to showcase type on top of a photo using Adobe Photoshop!

There are a lot of ways you can place text on top of a photo to assist your brand or the message your text may be trying to relay to your viewers. Not every photo is a good candidate for this. The less distraction of your photograph, the better your text will stand out. But I think you could use these three ways to help you.

Photos that Work Best

First off, choosing photos that work best and aren’t as contrasting or detailed are going to work best when placing type on top of them. For this photograph, Yehudis wanted to relay the message of a photo session in the home.

It’s pretty clean with most of the distraction in the center of the photograph. If this photograph was filled with details all over I would probably not use it for text on top of it. But, I think this will work out okay for what we’re trying to do.

Break Up Your Message

Be sure to break up your message. If you have a lot to say, that is. Creating one line larger than the next in point size of your fonts is helpful. Changing up the color of the two lines, and maybe even the font weight will give it some interesting character. If you only have a couple of words in your message, just choose something strong, but space out the characters a bit.

Option 1 for Text Overlaying Your Photos

For this option, creating a new Adjustment Layer with a color overlay will help subdue the details of the photograph. For this image, because there is more detail there, I opted to give the message a drop shadow to help it stand out more. Watch the video below for instructions on this. If this message were just on the top right where the wall is, you wouldn’t have to create a drop shadow to make it stand out more.

Option 2 for Text Overlaying Your Photos

The other day I showed you how to create a gradient/ombre overlay on your blog images. This is using that same technique. Yes, I know I have capturing spelled wrong! But, you get the idea. In all honesty, I would probably still had a drop shadow to the top set of words. The color of that blue isn’t quite bright enough to pop on its own.

Option 3 for Text Overlaying Your Photos

For this option, I’m showing you how to simply create a white box that has a reduced opacity. I also wanted to show you how this reddish color actually pops better than the blue. If you have really soft colors for your brand, you’re going to want to create those crop shadows shown in the video below to help them stand out a lot better.

Special thanks to Yehudis for sharing her photo for this tutorial!
